Embracing community and rediscovering passions

Melina moved to Oxa Care in February 2024, stepping into a new chapter filled with warmth, companionship, and opportunities to reconnect with her passions. Having lived a more private life before, she was uncertain about the transition. However, she quickly found comfort in her surroundings, settling into her private room on the first level, overlooking the gardens. Filled with reminders of her family, hobbies, and interests, her space reflected her life’s journey.

One of the biggest changes for Melina has been her newfound sense of community. She enjoys catching up with fellow Italian residents, engaging in meaningful conversations, and participating in social activities that keep her connected. Whether she’s reading Italian books, browsing social media, or making alterations to her clothes on the sewing machine in her room, she has found a fulfilling routine that allows her to express her creativity.

A life rooted in family and tradition

Born in Italy, Melina migrated to Australia in 1982, bringing with her a deep love for culture, tradition, and family. She spent much of her life working as a seamstress, a craft that remained close to her heart. Married for 55 years before becoming widowed in 2019, she devoted herself to raising her two daughters and cherishing time with her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Before moving to Oxa Care, Melina lived a quiet and independent life, rarely engaging in social groups. However, she keeps busy with personal interests—sewing, reading books, and even writing and producing her recipe book featuring traditional Italian dishes. While she found joy in these activities, she longed for more opportunities to connect with others who shared her background and interests.

A place to connect, create, and belong

When the time came to transition into aged care, Melina and her family sought a place where she could maintain her independence while embracing new friendships. Oxa Care stood out for its welcoming environment, Italian-speaking community, and personalised support. She quickly felt at home in a private room that reflected her passions—filled with family photos, sewing materials, and books.

At Oxa Care, Melina found comfort and opportunities to engage with others in meaningful ways. She enjoys catching up with fellow Italian residents, participating in daily activities, and even sharing her love for cooking by demonstrating traditional pasta-making. Whether attending Roman Catholic services when she is well enough or simply enjoying a chat over coffee, she has built a fulfilling and connected life.
