Finding Comfort and Creativity in a New Home

Verna arrived at Oxa Care on August 1, 2024, initially for respite care. After experiencing the welcoming environment and high-quality care, she made the decision to stay permanently on September 19, 2024. Having lived independently for over 35 years, this was a big transition—but one that brought her closer to a supportive community and the chance to embrace new experiences.

Her private room on Level 2 is filled with family photos, cherished memorabilia, and her beloved book collection, including The Bridges of Madison County. In a remarkable twist of fate, she discovered a copy of this book at Oxa Care—one she had donated to an op shop nearly three decades ago, still marked with her name and address inside the cover. Surrounded by familiar comforts, Verna has truly made Oxa Care her home.

A Life of Independence and Dedication

For over 35 years, Verna has lived independently, building a life filled with family, friendships, and career success. A dedicated mother, she raised her two daughters on her own while balancing a long and fulfilling career as a secretary at Caterpillar’s Head Office. Over her 30 years there, she witnessed the evolution of technology firsthand—moving from a manual typewriter to a teletext machine and eventually mastering computers before retiring at age 56.

Outside of work, Verna enjoys life’s simple pleasures. She loves reading, watching movies, and catching up with friends over lunch and long phone calls. She has stayed in touch with her former colleagues, maintaining lasting friendships for decades. Though fiercely independent, she remains closely supported by her daughter Carol, with whom she speaks daily.

The Perfect Choice for Comfort and Community

When it came time to explore aged care options, Verna’s daughter Carol toured multiple facilities before finding Oxa Care. Unlike the others, Oxa stood out for its warm atmosphere, high-quality care, and vibrant lifestyle programs. Carol felt it was the perfect place for her mother to transition into aged care —and after experiencing it for herself, Verna couldn’t agree more.

Oxa Care has given Verna the independence she values while surrounding her with opportunities to stay engaged. From daily chats with fellow residents to the freedom to decorate her private room with treasured memories, she has settled in seamlessly. With support always available and a welcoming environment, Verna has found a place where she can truly enjoy life.

  • A warm and welcoming environment.
  • The perfect balance of independence and support.
  • A community that encourages connection and activity.

A Life Filled with Joy and Creativity

At Oxa Care, Verna enjoys an active and fulfilling lifestyle, surrounded by friends and the comforts of home. She looks forward to outings, especially lunches and morning melodies, and loves participating in exercise programs, arts and crafts, happy hour, and coffee club.

Since moving in, Verna has also rediscovered her love for colouring, something she hadn’t done since childhood. She has completed four colouring books, which she now gifts to friends. Inspired by the diverse community at Oxa, she is even considering learning Italian to better communicate with fellow residents and her son-in-law. With a perfect mix of independence, social engagement, and relaxation, Verna has found a residential aged care home where she truly thrives.
