Gerard first arrived at Oxa Care in April 2024 for respite care, unsure of what to expect. However, after experiencing a supportive environment and personalised care, he stayed permanently in May 2024. Now, in his private room on Level 1 overlooking the gardens, he has created a space that allows him to maintain his independence while staying connected to the world. With his computer set up on his desk, he keeps up with world events, follows his favourite sports, and enjoys streaming on Netflix.
While Gerard values his independence, he also appreciates the structure and support that Oxa Care provides. His weekly physiotherapy sessions have helped him feel improvements in both his body and mind—something he highly recommends to others. His motto, “If you don’t move it, you’ll lose it,” reflects his proactive approach to maintaining his well-being. With access to quality care, engaging activities, and a welcoming environment, Gerard has found a place where he can thrive while continuing to enjoy his passions.
A Life of Passion and Achievement
American dancing, he claimed his titles in 1959 in London and achieved his greatest professional success by placing third in the World Professional Championships in 1960 in Berlin. Beyond his dancing career, his greatest pride has always been his four daughters, who remain the most important people in his life.
Before moving to Oxa Care, Gerard lived independently, staying mentally active by keeping up with global and national news. His transition to Oxa Care was a new chapter that allowed him to maintain his passions while receiving the needed support.
A Recommendation That Led to Home
Gerard’s journey to Oxa Care began with a simple recommendation. His barber, who had a family member at Oxa, suggested that Gerard’s daughter take a tour of the facility. After visiting and experiencing the welcoming environment, she felt confident that it was the right place for him. Initially joining as a respite resident in April 2024, Gerard quickly realised that Oxa Care offered the perfect balance of independence, support, and engagement, leading to his decision to stay permanently in May 2024.
What made Oxa Care the right fit for Gerard was the ability to maintain his personal routine while having access to quality care. His private room on Level 1 provided a quiet retreat where he could stay updated on world events, enjoy his favourite sports, and remain connected through technology. With dedicated support, access to physiotherapy, and a community that respects his independence, Gerard has found a place that aligns with his lifestyle.

Living Life on His Own Terms
Gerard has embraced his new chapter at Oxa Care with a sense of independence and routine. His days often begin with time on his computer, where he follows world news, tracks his favourite sports like tennis, soccer, and AFL, and stays connected with friends and family through social media. He enjoys the convenience of having everything he needs within reach—his private room offers both comfort and the perfect space to keep up with his interests.
One of the biggest changes since moving to Oxa Care has been his focus on maintaining physical well-being. With the help of a volunteer physiotherapist, Gerard has noticed real improvements in his physical and mental well-being. While he enjoys his own company, he values the support and opportunities to engage in activities at his own pace. Whether relaxing with Netflix, chatting online, or keeping up with current events, Gerard has found a balance between independence and care.
